From flab to fab, Mayling shares her top 5 tips to help you overcome obesity and her own transformation story to help inspire you.

Tell us more about yourself.

I was born in the UK grew up in Spain and now living in Asia. My father is Singaporean Chinese. I have lots of extended family and always loved this amazing Country.

Currently after winning Silver in the Bikini Division, SFBF invited me to compete in March 2012 which is still to be confirmed as I have just been informed I got a small part in a Feature film here Starring Zoe Tay and Aiden Gillen to be filmed in February (which I auditioned for twice, 1 week after competing).

My Goal for 2012 is after selling my business last year in Spain is to invest in Singapore with my Lyte Cafe and also expanding my Personal Training business with clients in London, Spain, Hong Kong, Thailand, Bali and now plan to move here (Singapore) permanently.

What sparked you into lifting weights?

Training in Kung Fu since I was 8 years old and in the gym since 16 but I was still always a big girl. I always loved Martial Art movies and at 27 years old I went for my dream sold my Chinese restaurant business at the time and moved to Hong Kong and trained to become a stunt woman. But my body frame, height (which apparently is bigger than typical Asian) and the Hong Kong film industry being in an Economic crisis at the time made it a struggle.

It was after returning back to Europe 10 years ago and struggling with weight issues all my life even thou I was training nearly everyday, I decided to put an end to it. I researched and gained as much information as possible finally through upping my protein intake and upping the weights and I transformed my own body. It got people talking and then London newspaper saw what I did with an Ex Boyfriend after he lost 50lbs in 5 months! They approached me to do The Executive Fit Club Column, training the big City Boys in a weight loss competition. I asked them to wait until I become certified, they did and then 6 months later I started the Fit Club and my new Business this time doing something I was passionate about and not back to the family restaurant business.

What is your training like?

For the competition I went down to 2 body parts and I did Glutes 3 times a week. When Targeting Glutes I'm obviously hitting my legs so I didn’t need to focus on my legs as in isolating muscle, because for me personally when I do, my quads make me look like QUADZILLA LOL! As they grow more than double any other body part!

Sample routine:

Day 1 – Gluteus (power & strength)
Day 2 – Back, Biceps
Day 3 – Gluteus (more on toning, unilateral work, machines)
Day 4 –Triceps, Deltoids, Chest
Day 5 – Gluteus (Speed, Endurance, Plyometrics)

Sometimes mixing full body circuits, Intervals, HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training).

Training my abs most days.

Can you describe your diet?

My diet consists of low GI Carbs, high in Protein and good Fats (Almonds, Avocado, Salmon). I usually don’t touch wheat. Instead I’ll have Quinoa and sweet potatoes. (Quinoa is a type of grain from Peru, a super food full of amino acids).

What top 5 tips would you give to anyone wanting to lose the extra flab, especially for the ladies?

1.Start lifting weights! Muscle uses more calories faster than fat (meaning you build muscles and burn fat even while sleeping).
2. Don’t starve yourself! Eat more frequently, Intervals of every 2-3 hours. (Your body needs fuel to burn fat!)
3. I'm a big believer in, you can only know where you’re going when you know where you been! (Log in your progress to assess your gains).

4.Don’t be scared of Proteins, muscles need them. (Going on a “veggies and fruits diet” will result in an imbalance diet and put your body in a catabolic state).
5. Always train with a heart rate monitor, staying within 70-85% of your MHR (maximum heart rate).
